TYPE: Hike | PACE: Conversational | TERRAIN: Dirt trail | LENGTH: Approximately 4 miles (round trip)
Walk Description: The focus of this hike is to show up for YOU and join others on the trail. Commit to doing something that might scare you, early, in the dark, see where you have to choose between comfort zone and grand adventure! I hear people say “I don’t know if I can keep up,” “it’s too dark,” “it’s too early” or “it’s too cold.” Come join me and see if you can. If I can do this, you can do this!
We start in the dark and hike to see the sunrise (a bit after 6:15am) from the summit. Bring a headlamp or flashlight for the very beginning of our hike (optional use).
Walking Movement Leader: Lisa Knauer hiked up Mt. Sanitas for sunrise for the first time on the winter solstice in 2014. She was hooked from that day forward. When not at her day job, Lisa is learning, stretching, growing and leading feminine sensual movement and pole classes at Became the Dance in Denver.
Schedule & Meeting Spot: We will meet at Lion’s Lair Spur Trailhead, 2 miles up Sunshine Canyon from 4th & Mapleton. In the hairpin turn you’ll pull to the right and park. It is a relatively gentle 2 miles of switchbacking trail to the summit of Sanitas and then another 2 down. We pause at the top to celebrate and reflect (and occasionally howl!). There are no access to restrooms.
Please be on time! I won’t wait after our scheduled start time.
-Trail Stats: 2.2 (4.4 roundtrip) miles of singletrack, 711′ elevation gain.
-NO DOGS are allowed on this trail.
-Bring an open mind, water if you need it, layers of clothes appropriate for the weather (bring extra layers for the top as it can be chilly watching the sun rise!) and comfortable footwear.
-Bring a headlamp or flashlight (optional use on the trail, if it’s clear we’ll have a fairly bright moon to guide our way).
-If you have them bring ice traction devices for your footwear (ex. Kahtoola Microspikes, Yaktrax, Korkers, etc.). We usually don’t need them yet I tend to carry them in my backpack in winter like a security blanket.
-Cell service is incredibly spotty and lacking in this area. I will not be able to return calls/texts the morning of the hike.
-Please be on time! I won’t wait after our scheduled start time.
-Cancellation Policy: We only cancel in extreme weather conditions on this trail, such as heavy active snowstorms, hail, or lightning. Check Meetup or text the walk leader for the most up-to-date conditions.
