Connecting the Creek–Segment 3 Sand Creek

May 12 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free

SEGMENT 3 Bluff Lake through Stapleton

TYPE: W&T | PACE: 2-3 mph |TERRAIN: Lots of sidewalk, small hills, dirt/pebble trail | DIFFICULTY: Moderate| DISTANCE: Approx. 4.5 miles

Walk Description: In partnership with the Sand Creek Greenway Partnership we will walk the entire Sand Creek Greenway, one segment at a time, covering most of the 14-mile trail. Check out our overview page here for more information on all of our walking events.

Segment 3 of 4. Miles 7-11. On this segment, we’ll start at  Bluff Lake Nature Center and end just west of Stapleton. Leaving Bluff Lake, we’ll amble through Stapleton, Central Park, and under Quebec. We’ll learn about the history of the Stapleton airport, see old runways, and see evidence of the old Danish pig farms. Although we’ll pass under major intersections and two interstates, you’ll barely notice the notice as we enjoy our escape along the Sand Creek.

Walking Movement Leader: Chris Englert, a Walk2Connect Member-owner, lives off the Sand Creek and consistently answers the question, “Where’s the Sand Creek?” She is author of The Best Urban Hikes: Denver. Robbin Mitchell, a board member for the Sand Creek Greenway Partnership, leads walks along the High Line and elsewhere in Aurora on a weekly basis.

Carpooling: In order for all of us to complete this walk, we will organize into carpools. If you are not willing to BOTH drive and ride in a carpool, please contact Chris immediately so we can make arrangements. Please remember that we will be working as one giant team, and all members of the team are necessary for everyone to have a positive experience.

Meeting Location, Parking, Carpooling, and Planning: We will meet at the end of the segment. Park at the trail head, 6198 E 52nd Ave Commerce City. Please be parked and ready to walk by 8:45 am. There are bathrooms at the start of the walk. If you want to take transit, buses 88 and 40 stop nearby.

We will leave no later than 9:05 am. From here, we will gather into a smaller group of cars and drive to the start of the walk at the Bluff Lake Nature Center, 3400 Havana Way, Denver, CO 80238. If you are not comfortable carpooling, please make other arrangements to meet us at the start of the walk and for you to depart the walk. Alternatively, you can take a Lyft. If you use this link and you’re a new Lyft user, you get a credit toward your first ride.

We will then walk the segment. When we get to Commerce City a group of drivers will be needed to carpool the original drivers to Bluff Lake.

Welcome Waiver: All walkers, each year, must sign the Walk2Connect Welcome Waiver.

Final Details Email: You will receive final details about this segment on the Friday by 5 pm before we walk. Refer to this final details email for concluding comments about weather, parking, and conditions. If you do not receive this email by 5 pm on the Friday before the walk, call Chris immediately at 303-507-7280.
