SEGMENT 1 Eastern Aurora to Star K
TYPE: W&T | PACE: 2-3 mph |TERRAIN: Lots of sidewalk, small hills, dirt/pebble trail | DIFFICULTY: Moderate| DISTANCE: Approx. 4 miles
Walk Description: In partnership with the Sand Creek Greenway Partnership we will walk the entire Sand Creek Greenway, one segment at a time, covering most of the 14-mile trail. Check out our overview page here for more information on all of our walking events.
Segment 1 of 4. Miles 1-4. On this segment, we’ll start at the Cold Creek Arena, meander on undeveloped trail and developed trail, and end at Star K Ranch. We’ll cross Colfax twice, yet most of the time we won’t even hear its buzz. We’ll learn about the Sand Creek, possibly seeing deer, beaver, hawks, and prairie dogs and start our 14-mile adventure toward Commerce City.
Walking Movement Leader: Chris Englert, a Walk2Connect Member-owner, lives off the Sand Creek and consistently answers the question, “Where’s the Sand Creek?” She is author of The Best Urban Hikes: Denver. Robbin Mitchell, a board member for the Sand Creek Greenway Partnership, leads walks along the High Line and elsewhere in Aurora on a weekly basis.
Carpooling: In order for all of us to complete this walk, we will organize into carpools. If you are not willing to BOTH drive and ride in a carpool, please contact Chris immediately so we can make arrangements. Please remember that we will be working as one giant team, and all members of the team are necessary for everyone to have a positive experience.
Meeting Location, Parking, Carpooling, and Planning: We will meet at the end of the segment. Park at Star K Ranch 16002 E Smith Rd, Aurora, CO. Please be parked and ready to walk by 8:45 am. If you want to take transit, bus 37 stops nearby. There are restrooms at both ends of the segment.
We will leave no later than 9:05 am. From here, we will gather into a smaller group of cars and drive to the start of the walk at the Sand Creek Trail Head, Aurora Soccer Complex, 19300 E Colfax Ave, Aurora, CO 80011. This is a giant parking lot of soccer fields. Drive all the way to the very southeast side as far as you can go. You’ll be on the edge of the soccer fields. The prairie will be on your east, the soccer fields will be on your west. See map.
If you are not comfortable carpooling, please make other arrangements to meet us at the start of the walk and for you to depart the walk. Alternatively, you can take a Lyft. If you use this link and you’re a new Lyft user, you get a credit toward your first ride.
We will then walk the segment. When we get to Star K Ranch, a group of drivers will be needed to carpool the original drivers to Cold Creek Arena.
Required: PLEASE download Lyft or Uber to your phone. This is a safety precaution and will come in handy in case an issue arises for you on the trail.
Welcome Waiver: All walkers, each year, must sign the Walk2Connect Welcome Waiver.
