Have you ever dreamed of hiking the Colorado Trail, Appalachian Trail, or Continental Divide Trail? Do you want the skills to prepare, plan, and finish a long distance backpacking trip? On Saturday May 17th, Walk2Connect’s backcountry hiking expert, Liz Thomas, will lead a moving lesson on how to backpack. Liz will teach practical skills gained from over 12,000 miles of long distance hiking, including her record-breaking trip on the Appalachian Trail (women’s unassisted speed record, 2011).
Whether you are new to backpacking or are looking to beef up your skills before a long trip, this walking clinic will help prepare you for your journey. The “walkshop” will address the how-to’s of backcountry walking/hiking using resources in the city, allowing students to take advantage of the backpacking training assets close to home.
The walking route is approximately 10 miles and will be broken into five 2- mile segments. Each segment will focus on knowledge and tools needed for long distance hiking: 1) planning, logistics, and organization 2) gear and equipment 3) food and water 4) weather, wildlife, being lost, and safety 5) training for your next hike. Participants will receive take home hand-outs to augment in-person lessons.
All meeting points are along the Light Rail to make parking and returning to your car easy. We will provide snacks, but please bring your own lunch.
Please note the registration deadline is May 16th! Event details, including exact meet up locations, will be confirmed the week before the event. This is open to all hiking levels so invite your friends to come along and learn about long distance backpacking.
